An online course will normally involve a student logging on to access course materials, assignments and marks for assignments. This can work well for courses with limited material and simple assignments.
A distance-learning course will generally provide course materials for students by download from a secure server, on a CD or in printed form. This method of training will be suitable for courses with a significant level of material, varied assignments and a significant level of feedback from tutors.
A professionally designed TESOL distance-learning course of 150 hours (equivalent to a one-month, full-time training programme) will normally be appropriate by distance learning but less so as an online course.
With both types of courses there can be significant advantages for students.
When people speak of an online TESOL course, in fact they are often referring to a distance-learning course. The fact that the TESOL distance-learning course material can be delivered by download from the course provider's server means that people sometimes confuse this delivery method with an online TESOL course.
