TESOL Accreditation

The TESOL-direct TESOL teacher training course and TESOL business English course are accredited by the College of Teachers established by Royal Charter. This accreditation means that our courses have reached specific standards set by this long-established and well-respected external validating body. So you can be sure that your course materials are not only of the highest quality, but also that your certificate will be accepted worldwide.

The British Council recognizes the College of Teachers as a validating body, together with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, Trinity College London and UK universities.

Institutions providing courses accredited by the College of Teachers are required to adhere to rigorous quality control procedures and are assessed by experts in TESOL to ensure the highest standards of quality, course delivery and candidate assessment procedures.

On successful completion of your course you will receive a College of Teachers TESOL certificate - Associateship of the College of Teachers in TESOL - ACoT (TESOL).

What exactly is this TESOL qualification?

The College of Teachers gives the following guidelines for the uses of each of their TESOL certificates and the minimum number of hours that each course level should provide:

The Certificate of Educational Studies – COES (TESOL)
  • aimed at tutors undertaking one-to-one or small group teaching;
  • the course should provide a minimum of 50 hours tuition.
The Associateship of the College of Teachers –  ACoT (TESOL)
  • an appropriate qualification for classroom teaching;
  • the course should last at least 115 hours.
The Diploma of the College of Teachers – DCoT (TESOL)
  • intended for more experienced, senior teachers and teacher trainers;
  • intended for more experienced, senior teachers and teacher trainers;
  • the course should last for a minimum of 270 hours.

It is important to note that the COES course is an introductory course with a maximum of 100 hours. It is not a full training programme and may not be acceptable to many employers as a full TESOL qualification.

Because of this, we have chosen to offer the ACoT (TESOL) certificate because we feel that it will provide you with greater practical knowledge and confidence to prepare lessons and teach in the classroom than the COES certificate would.

The ACoT (TESOL) certificate allows you to start classroom teaching immediately whether you already have some experience or are new to teaching English to speakers of other languages.

When you are choosing a TESOL distance course or TEFL distance course you should make sure that the certificate you receive is both accredited by an internationally recognised institution and is at the right level to enable you to teach effectively in a classroom.
